Well, this is a nice change of pace. When Supergirl‘s first season aired on CBS, the network hemmed and hawed until the eleventh hour about whether or not the show would see a renewal. Well, not this time. The network wasted no time in announcing Supergirl Season 3 will the second season was still airing.

Supergirl Season 3 Latest News

Big news coming out of the Supergirl camp this week. Series co-creator Ali Adler will be leaving as showrunner, with Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner stepping up to take her place, alongside series co-creator Andrew Kreisberg. Adler will stay on for a consultant for the show, as well as consulting on CW’s freshman reboot Dynasty as part of her overall deal with CBS TV Studios, according to Deadline.

While this makes us a bit more hopeful about Dynasty‘s prospects, it’s sad to see Adler leave her major role in Supergirl. Under her guidance, the show has soared into its place as one of the best superhero shows on television, with some of the best female-centric and queer storytelling on TV. We’re sad to see her go, but continue to stay optimistic that the team she left in place will continue Supergirl‘s narrative hot streak.

Supergirl Season 3 Release Date

Supergirl Season 3 will arrive on Monday, October 9th. Right after the end of New York Comic Con!

Supergirl Season 3 Villain

We know who that big villain for next year is going to be, though. The season finale teased another Kryptonian would be joining the party, and we speculated that this would be relatively recent Supergirl foe, Reign. It’s true.

Odette Anabelle (Pure Genius) has been cast as Reign on Supergirl Season 3. According to Deadline, she’ll have a different look from her comics version…

“Greg (Berlanti) and I have wanted to work with Odette for years,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in a statement. “We are beyond excited to have her join our cast in the scary, powerful and heartbreaking role of Reign.”

Reign was created by Michael Green (current co-showrunner on American Gods on Starz, and who worked on the Logan screenplay), Mike Johnson, and Mahmud Asrar. Her story kicked off in Supergirl Vol. 1: The Last Daughter of Krypton, which is available on Amazon.

Supergirl Season 3 Cast

The producers are already starting to put elements of Supergirl Season 3 in place. Katie McGrath will be a series regular when things get going next year, according to Deadline. Unfortunately, Floriana Lima won’t be back as a series regular, which puts a damper on the prospects of that big marriage proposal. She’ll still be around, just not as a series regular.

Season 2 got off to a strong start by introducing Tyler Hoechlin as Superman alongside Ms. McGrath’s Lena Luthor, and then promptly forged its own path, introducing more alien characters and taking more chances with its stories.

We’ll update this with more information when we have it.
