If you are wondering why the recent Microsoft and Facebook agreements are so relevant, consider a couple things. Facebook membership and usage grows at leaps and bounds. Facebook is becoming one of the primary places for people to go on the internet, and while they are there, they search for things and people. More people and groups right now than anything else, but that might change soon.

Bing web search is now integrated into Facebook search. Perform a search in Facebook and if there is no direct search result within Facebook itself, you will see the top 3 results from the web powered by Bing, Microsoft’s search engine.

Recently I completed a web site roll out for a client of mine via Softduit Media. Its a graphic design site in Iowa called Design 26 (http://graphicdesign26.com ). The site is relatively new, but rapidly moving up the search results in its niche, including the search results within Bing.

One of the bi-products of that foundational search engine optimization of the site we set up is that the site is now also on the front page results in Facebook for ‘urbandale graphic design’.

If you expand those results, they are also listed a second time in position 6.

From a cultural perspective people are not using Facebook as a search engine, very much. However, the cultural shift that turned YouTube into one of the largest search engines on the internet behind Google, could also work in another social network like Facebook, but this time the search is powered by Microsoft. Optimizing for Bing may have never before been so important, but it will be now.

I found this cool looking plugin recently that helps you optimize keywords within a WordPress Post or Page. It doesn’t help you find keywords, but once you know the keywords that you want to emphasize with a <strong> tag for example, you can type in the word into the admin panel and the plugin will automatically place the keywords in bold for you, helping to emphasize to search engines that a give post is more about the keywords highlighted, which is more effective than using keywords in a meta tag list.

Highlights

Author: spunkyjones.com

The keyword optimizer SEO plugin was developed so that important blog post keywords on a website could be optimized using the HTML <strong>, <em> and <u> tags. It allows the webmaster to select the keywords he/she wants to optimize from the administration panel and let’s them assign a limit to the number of times a chosen effect is applied to those keywords.

To demonstrate an example of this SEO plugin, if "articles" is an important keyword on a website than the webmaster can choose to surround this keyword around the tag. Using this plugin, the webmaster would need to enter this keyword into the <strong> set under the administration panel and all references to the word "articles" in a given post will be automatically placed inside the <strong> tag. The limit feature provided by the plugin lets the webmaster control the number of times this effect would be applied to that keyword. If suppose the limit is set to 2, then only the first two references to the word "articles" will be effected.

From time to time, I will write a comment on a blog that is so damned long, that it just doesn’t make good blogging sense to publish the thing as a comment. I say if your comment grows beyond 1000 words (for me) or maybe 1 quarter the length of the original article for your average person that is more sane than I am, then you should publish it on your own site!

So today, I read this great article by Jon Payne titled

Online Marketing MLM Schemes & Scams, iJango & Over-Hyping

You should read it. Its a great article. You will learn something reading the article. That goes double if you are trying to understand business models in online marketing, blogging, seo or search.

Go read it. (Sure click away, do it now, the rest of this article won’t make sense until you do!)

I must warn you the article is over 4,000 words long. If that’s not your cup of tea, click away. Anyone that fears word count should probably not read any of my stuff anyway, because I’m a long winded(worded) blogger. Wordcount doesn’t scare me at all.

By last count of this article it was close to 2500 words

I like to read. I like to writer, hence I blog.

So if you read the article and you are now back, thanks for coming back! (Drop me a comment or something, maybe your twitter link, odds are you are my type of people, or just some internet loon that doesn’t know any better, either way you know what they say, “keep your friends close, and always monitor the location of your internet stalkers!”

So this is my comment to Jon on the subject of iJango being as much of a Scam as Google

Great article, about half way through, it struck me that this would probably make a good ebook or at least a white paper (just add stats)

I thought your perceptions, especially on your two friends in Baltimore were very interesting and enlightening.

Back in 2005 I left the world of accounting and began working online after a friendly little run in with the some Chinese mafia types that bought a division from Motorola that I happened to work for at the time.

I had an over developed sense of skepticism back then and still do today. That came to me in part from years of work in multiple industries, along with too many years spent in school, and a couple death threats from some people that made a billion dollars per year helped me hone that skepticism even more.

CIT Bomb to Kill Chinese Manufacturing and US Retailers?

Point is, when I started working online, I rapidly learned that even with my training and experience (at that time likely fitting the profile of the targets of the ebooks mentioned above) I could rarely tell a legitimate website from a scammy website or company when it came to online revenue topics.

I used to work in credit, giving credit lines ranging from $5,000 up to $1 billion (Verizon Wireless 2001). It was my job to review companies based on their merits and then put my companies money and my job on the line with the decision.

But when I entered this area of the online world, the tools used by both legitimate and illegitimate companies and everyone in between were exactly the same, thus the results could be very very similar.

Furthermore, having my over developed sense of skepticism and having worked companies like Verizon, Motorola, Wal-Mart etc. I also happened to know that just because a fortune 500 or 100 company makes a lot of money, has a lot of customers, and a lot of employees, it doesn’t meant that they are not the role model for social responsibility.

As this is an SEO blog, and as I work in a couple niche areas of the SEO industry (I don’t work in PPC, not my thing, don’t claim it to be etc etc) but SEO I know a thing or two about. [further disclaimer, if you want to hire an SEO consultant see the author or the commentators above before you talk to me.] All that said, Google provides the primary play ground for people to play in today. They have this interesting little concept of ‘do no evil’ built into the foundation of their company.

Yet, they are a corporation, which by its very nature (read up on the foundations of corporate law in the US over the last 120 years) is designed to shield the business entity from the mistakes and problems it or its employees might make. End result, when Google or its employees make mistakes or go after a business or industry, people get hurt. When people get hurt, some people view that as a type of evil, but Google as a corporation established to do no evil is a bit of an operating paradox, similar to the Ijango business that on one hand says one thing on its website and says another in its TOS.

That’s Google too, just bigger, with more money, and low IQ bigots.

What’s the point?

I’m not promoting ijango, I stayed away from that event the other night.

The point is that for the most part, anything that can make you money on the internet can typically be learned with out paying anyone for it.

Right from go, if anyone wants to charge you to teach you something on or about the internet, your skepticism radar should start going off immediately.

Does that mean you should never pay to learn anything? From a ebook? from a book on amazon? from a school or college or university?

No, it doesn’t. Some people have to learn things the hard way.

Everyone’s definition of the ‘hard way’ or ‘life lesson’ or ‘hard lessons in life’ is a little different.

Some people have to pay for information because Google doesn’t always work well (often doesn’t, and often the info isn’t in a form that Google can even find)

Some people can not use good information when they find it. They just aren’t prepared to put a lesson to work for them yet. I can tell a person how to grease the bearings on a car, but if they don’t know how to remove the lug nuts, they are sol.

Some people will buy scammy information and not learn the lesson that it is scammy

Some people will perpetuate a scam to recoup their money or time investment, some will do it because they do not know it is a scam.

Some people will push a dream knowing that eventually a dream can become a new type of reality, (like a Google that came up with a crazy idea that the number of links might help build better search results and charging people for PPC could be tied to that Search Engine to make a profit, and despite the millions if not billions of dollars of click fraud that followed immediately there after, eventually developed into a quasi legitimate business that many people accept and believe in. (if you want a different analogy study up on what it takes for a country to become a sovereign nation or a cult to become a religion-> a lot of belief really and not much else)

This list could
go on and on and on . . . Go watch Idiocracy if you want to see how dumb people are becoming ~ I wonder if there is a connection between Brawndo and iJango????

So anyway, as we attempt to avoid drinking the cool aid, we have to do it knowing our own subjective perspective. At the end of the day it is completely impossible for any person to be completely objective. Absolutely impossible, no two ways about it, I literally tested out of rhetoric in college after proving this (to a subjective college professor) in words, meaning I’m more than happy to debate it, but be prepared for a long winded discussion.

Its easy to castigate iJango, mostly because there is a lot of easily identifiable bad press behind the guy that founded it.

If he didn’t have a bunch of failed businesses, back child support and complaints in courts around the country, but instead had an MIT pedigree, he might find is business concept more tenable. (and he wouldn’t be pitching it to a bunch of people in a hotel ball room that cost a couple hundred dollars)

Google is not considered a scam (these days) because they survived long enough to prove their critics mostly wrong, survived enough of the lawsuits that showed their scammy nature and flawed algorithms, survived long enough to compromise their do no evil mission justifying that compromise with their sorbanes-oxley requirements to attain shareholder value because they are a publicly traded corporation.

But at the end of the day there isn’t much difference (more objectively speaking) than Google and iJango.

They are both just tools. If iJango develops the critical mass of people to make it the preferred tool over Google, then Google will become the new Yahoo and iJango will become the new Google.

The best tool does not always rise to the top (blueray, betamax, digital cellphones, any recently available generic drug replaced in the pipeline by a new drug with a big marketing budget, say the purple pill . . . ., Xerox’s PARC desktop computer of 1972, which was promptly ripped off by both Steve Jobs & Bill Gates over a decade or two later)

If you haven’t seen the Triumph of the Nerds Documentary by PBS, that’s definitely worth paying some money to ‘learn something’.

Unanswered Questions

At this point you may have a few unanswered questions

1. What’s this guys Twitter Address? (I want to follow him)

http://twitter.com/brettbum

2. What’s this guys twitter Address? (I want to make sure I’m not following him)

http://twitter.com/michael_vick

3. Trivia – What S&P 500 is in the news this week that helped launder money for the Chinese company that threatened to make Brett disappear?

The CIT Group ~ I don’t think they realized their complicity at first, why they chose to continue is their issue.

4. Will you be at Blogworld in Vegas in October?

Yes, but that’s an irrelevant question

5. Have you ever purchased anything from iJango or Google and been ripped off?

I’ve never purchased anything from iJango and don’t plan on it. I have run PPC ad campaigns through Google Adwords, and always felt that I was not getting enough ROI from the results. I have also registered domain names through Google, one third of those registrations and the services they were attached to were not delivered successfully correctly and I think I was ripped off because Google didn’t staff that area of their company correctly.

6. Do you make more working online now or did you make more working in corporate finance?

That’s none of your business, but since you asked, I will tell you that working online is not a get rich quick type of area for most people. At the peak of my corporate finance career I made about $100k per year, and was rewarded with death threats for myself and my family not to mention a 3 – 6 hour round trip commute everyday.

Working online as a blogger and web designer, and marketing consultant ( I too do not really need more streams of income) I make about half what I made in corporate finance, but no one has threatened to kill me, nor my kids, I have not been required to become a whistleblower for the IRS, I have not had to hide out on the Lamb in a different state with my name on an FBI watchlist of people that should be considered homicides immediately if they are reported missing. I also have zero commute and work on a fishing dock, so fuck you Chinese Mafia types!

7. Will you teach me to do what you do if I pay you a lot of money? Any money? Buy you a 12 pack of Coke Zero? Promise you a potential job and then chat with you for two weeks until I pump as much useful information as I can pump out of you while still maintaining the farce that I have consulting work for you before I break the news to you that I no longer have the budget?

Yes to all of the above. I help people learn how to do this all the time. I typically try to help them for FREE, but I do charge for some of my training services. Bottom line is that if you want to come to our community events, you can learn for free, if you want to learn it right away now, put it to good use, and learn it on your schedule and not mine, then you have to pay me to schedule the time in.

8. Do you think Matt Cutts is a Paid Schill?

Yes, isn’t that obvious? He’s an employee of one of the largest marketing companies in the world. He’s like a Microsoft Tech Support Call Representative, except he’s competent. If you are an employee, I’ve got news for you, ‘you are a paid schill’ that goes double if you get paid to blog, write about your company. I’ve never met him in person (which doesn’t matter). He seems like a nice guy as far as his online persona goes, but if you read that original article, you might now understand that there is a difference between an online blog persona and reality and that goes triple for anyone that speaks regularly at social media events)

I don’t have a problem with that btw. This gets back to that subjective versus objective debate. I personally just thinks its important to be able to recognize the fact that the cool aid is spiked with AUM (See The Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson and Bob Shea)

Very funny book and as far as I can tell the first fiction work to talk about the Illuminati (dates back to 1969-1972)

9. Will these post blog article questions ever end?</st
rong>

Yes

I have been expending a great deal of effort testing plugins that offer some form of management over nofollow links on a WordPress site. I’m looking for something that will enable me to specifically select a page or Post by the Post ID and mark that page or post to always receive a nofollow tag whenever I link to it within my blog.

There are several plugins that help to provide nofollow tags for things like Categories, Tags, Archives etc.

The only one that seemed to do this reliably was the tool that came with Headspace( author homepage), although it missed a few from time to time as well. Anyway, I can’t recommend any of these because they did not do what I was looking for, but I can help you take a look at what I have searched through and experimented with myself. If you find something better, let me know and I will happily cover you or your site in a future article with a link (absent the nofollow tag).

Are you famous on twitter? Are you heading there quickly? Then make the right SEO play and insure that you put a realy hyperlink in your Twitter account for your web address.

Just because every other link on Twitter gets shortened, don’t forget the rest of the world outside of twitter mostly uses real and complete hyperlinks still. That includes Google and Google is important for your other internet activities.

I’d like to hold up my good friend Warren Whitlock, one of the authors of the Twitter Revolution as a bit of an example. Warren has over 17,000 active followers on Twitter. These are NOT just people that hit follow for the hell of it, these are people plugged into twitter and actively engaged in this social network.

He has a shortened link to his book, Twitter Revolution under his profile.

Now Warren does know what he’s doing. That link goes to his Amazon home page for the book, Twitter Revolution. But even the Amazon page already has a PR3 all by itself, and even more importantly the Book already ranks number 1 in Google for the Keywords Twitter Revolution. So if someone is looking for that book, they are going to find it.

I was talking with Warren earlier today and we talked about putting a link to his actual home page at WarrenWhitlock.com. Now currently WarrenWhitlock.com only has a PR3. It too comes up in the number 1 slot for Warren Whitlock, but he could funnel off some of that important PR5 juice to his own site and then from there push it around to his other ventures, not to mention to some of his blog articles, other books or a number of different things. Sending the link Juice to Amazon doesn’t make since now that the book is established.

The fact that Warren has a PR5 on a twitter profile definitely shows that he is doing something more than right!

But after that he’s missing out on some of the benefits of having done that very right. So the next step is to figure out how to harness that energy from an SEO perspective and do some additional things, very right as well!

Over the years, I have accumulated a handful of blogspot blogs and blogspot domains that are miraculously worthy of not throwing away. There is much talk about the low quality of blogs in the blogspot domain area, but the truth is that the blogger engine is not that bad, and that there are many very good blogs in the system. Unfortunately, the proportion of very bad blogs in the system, makes the neighborhood a bit of a tragedy, a blog slum if you will. I do not want to be the equivalent of a slum lord by keeping a few good properties in the slum.

That said, I also do not want to lose the readers, followers, subscribers and the incoming links and Search engine traffic on all those deep links. Since I do not ‘own’ the blospot domain, that leaves with few options, but this weekend, I started to invest the time to determine the best way to redirect my blogspot blogs out of blogspot. Let me be clear, I do not want to power these sites with blogger any more. I want the content hosted on WordPress, which is now far superior to blogger, no matter how easy it is to initially get started with blogger. So I need the following:

Old Content imported into a new WordPress site on a domain I own

Old blogspot domain to correctly redirect incoming traffic from primary URL and deep links to the correct destination on the new site

If I can keep incoming links and resulting link juice associated with them so much the better, but the primary goal is to insure that my readers can find what they are looking for.

Now, in the past, I’ve used a meta tag redirect. It only works at the primary url level and is worthless for link juice. Its basically just an automated way of shoving people from the wrong site to the right site, but they get no direction upon arriving on how to find the deep article they are looking for.

Google will allow you to buy a domain of your own, but you have to be willing to then host your resulting site with the blogger engine. That trade off just is not what I’m looking for. WordPress has too many great options, plugins and more as compared to blogger which has not kept up, especially in the last couple years.

Google does have a process (supposedly) where by you can point your old blogspot blog to a domain you already own. That domain can be powered by anything including WordPress. Google however, does not want a spammer to take traffic from a blogspot address and then point it out to some dangerous place on the web. So they require that you verify your identity with them before they will create the redirect mapping to your new site.

That requires something I consider ‘mysterious’ because I’ve never had a need to work with it in the past. Its called a CNAME. If I set up a CNAME, sometimes known as a DNS alias. I can apparently point the alias to Google’s name server. They can confirm my identity and they will then do the redirect.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t have the foggiest how a CNAME works or what it is, and I haven’t found a good resource to walk me through it on the internet yet. My own host, requires that CNAME’s be set up through manual email requests, so the absence of a hands on opportunity to work on it, might leave this shrouded in mystery for me, but I gave it my best bet below.

My name is Brett and I have a virtual private server account on https://myvpslocation.something my user id there is *****, I’d prefer to not put my password in an email together with the ID.

Goal: I have an existing site at http://mygreatrealdomain.domain.com . I also have an older site at http://oldsubpardomain.blogspot.com . I am consolidating the two, and have moved the content from the blogspot address to my wordpress site at http://mygreatrealdomain.domain.com . I’m going through the steps with Google to have them redirect the blogspot address to the new domain.

Google requires a CNAME pointed towards ghs.google.com. I believe I need this from the subdomain belizebusiness.softduit.com so that Google can confirm I own/control that subdomain. Once they confirm it, they will then allow the redirection from my blogspot site to my existing site at belizebusiness.softduit.com.

This is my first attempt at doing one of thes redirects or working with CNAMES. If any of my instructions don’t make sense or seem like they might achieve a bad result, please contact me by phone or email before you act so that we can resolve any discrepancy in these instructions or my intent. I have a few more of these that I will need to do as I consolidate other old blogspot domains to sites I host, but want to start with this one and insure that I understand how it works before I proceed with the others.

So this is my first attempt, I’ll add an update after I get further into this process and let you know if it works as intended or if it goes down in flames as a half baked idea that doesn’t quite work in execution. I know there are a large number of users trying to get off of blogspot domains, but don’t know if this is the right way to achieve that goal or not.

I found a great little SEO tip for working with Tables over at Smartlab Software. It basically tells us (reminds some of us) that if you are working with tables, find a reason to work with tables, or maybe even if you go out of your way to work with tables, you can include the following code:

in order to help the search engines better understand what your table is about. This will also likely help when it comes keyword density as well.

Now, I don’t want to just mention this great tip and give a shout out to Doug at Smartlab Software (They really do have some great tips there!)

But I also want to add to it with another tip to mix with the rest of the toys in your SEO toy box.

If you are writing articles for a blog or even if you are designing individual pages, you can use this tip for image optimization as well.

You could simply input your images straight into a page or site. However, if you drop that image into a table, creating a caption box with a top row for the image and the bottom row for the image caption, you will then be able to include a table summary, include all the normal image information, plus include an image caption.

All of these steps will help your page performance around the image and it will also help your page for SEO, especially where keyword density applies.

I routinely run into questions about setting up 301 Redirects in situations that I have not encountered yet. When I run into these new challenges, I do a quick Google search and never find the same answer twice about 301 Redirects.

That said, today I had a quick refresher question about the SEO benefits of 301 redirects relating to pushing a www site to a non-www site (Canonical Situations).

I came across this excellent article at SEO-Consultant-Services.co.uk which answered the questions I was looking for and it also answered the typical questions that most people ask when they are looking for 301 redirect solutions. I have come across a number of similar articles on 301 Redirects in the past, but this one was easy to understand, easy to implement, and very comprehensive in covering all of those 301 Redirect tangents that will eventually confront a web site owner.

http://www.seo-consultant-services.co.uk/301-redirects-www-non-www-canonical-problems.html

I have no relationship to this site, they do not sponsor me in any way, but I would highly recommend web site owners to bookmark this link. You are going to need it someday, and Google as good as they are sometimes, rarely returns a reliable result on 301 redirects!

Note, the CSS was a little hosed up on this site when I visited. I’d guess that they updated the theme and did not check this older article on the new theme. Regardless the content is good. I prefer things to look good, but I’ll take great content any day.

Some but probably not all the types

Copy and paste all your content onto their site with no credit

Copy and paste and unreasonably large amount of content onto their site with no permission but with a link to your site as attribution

Copy a paragraph of your content (or maybe a few sentences) and a link to your article saying something like -> “Here’s another great article about botox complications and hemorrhoids! “

Running a short syndicated feed of your material (Headline, excerpt and link to your article)

Building an entire news or blog site dedicated to doing number 4 with all the news and blog sites in the world (think

Google news or Google Blog search) –

Note. I am not passing judgement on Google for this behavior. Google has been sued for this several times.

Any of the above (not counting Google news and the syndicated feed) can trigger a potential comment in wordpress with a trackback link in your comments that points to the permalink that referenced your site.

If you allow that comment to go through, you are allowing a nofollow link to point to that website. You are not passing juice, but nofollow links are indexed and you could be mixing your site with a blacklisted neighborhood on the internet. This could be very bad for your website health.

I recommend marking scraped trackback comments as SPAM, just to be safe at a minimum, remove the link from their trackback, and maybe just show their url address in text form.

If you consider your readers perspective, if they come to your site first, and they then click out from a link to a scraper site that has a link in your comments,

you are losing readers to a scraper site

Your sites credibility is harmed in the eyes of the reader as a crank website is pointing at you

They may see something very vile on the other end or even pick up a computer virus or something if they are scraping not to steal your content but to pull people away with your content and give their computer something nasty!
