Utterli Improves Video – Saves Pownce Users Content
Utterli announced a major video upgrade this week. That was something that I was definitely looking for myself. After switching phones to a Nokia 5310 xpressMusic from my Treo on Verizon that turned into a pumpkin, I was almost unable to submit a viewable video to Utterli. The camera on the 5310 was three times better than the treo, but the resolution size was such that Utterli’s system would distort it all the way to hell and back. (technical term for generally mucking something up real good)
Well the new Video solution puts me back in the mobile video game with my phone. Its still not anything to write home about, but its not gibberish either.
For Pounce users, the big news was that Utterli had stepped up to the plate and created a solution such that they could salvage their content. Pownce has apparently been pounced into non-existence by Six-Apart in a move to create something better while pissing everyone off, and they are discontinuing their service. So Utterli is offering a way for people to move their content to a stable and well funded platform(funded well, but no revenue plan yet).
Here’s a portion of the message that came out from Utterli:
- New and improved video (higher quality, faster load time)
- Content importer for Pownce: post all your content as utters
- New splash page and site for the iPhone: you can now play audio and video:

New & Improved Utterli Video
We’ve introduced a higher quality video capability to the Utterli experience, with all new videos, whether recorded or uploaded, being stored and played back in MP4/H.264. What you should know:
- The quality is better than the old format at a reduced file size; THIS MEANS: faster downloads over slower internet connections.
- This file format is supported on the iPhone video player; THIS MEANS: any videos uploaded or recorded from this point forward will play on the iPhone or iPod Touch (we’re also working to convert all existing videos as well).
Pownce Content Importer

As a result of Pownce’s announcement that they are shutting down, and out of consideration for our shared users, we’ve created a Pownce content importer that will allow you to transfer all of your text & multimedia Pownce content to Utterli in a single step.
To learn more and get started on importing your Pownce content to Utterli, head here: http://www.utterli.com/u/pownceImport
To join the Pownce Importer Support group and provide or receive customer support, head here: http://www.utterli.com/Pownce_Importer_Support
That should save some people some trouble, but its not the only importer out there that will save you from the pain, almost equivalent to Plantar Fasciitis, of potentially losing your content. There are also importer instructions for most of the major blogging platforms here.

Utterli Error for establishing Connection to self hosted WordPress
Today, I was attempting to set up a connection to a self hosted WordPress site and received the following error:
CurlOpt failed: Array ( [url] => http://www.mysitename.com/xmlrpc.php [content_type] => text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 [http_code] => 301 [header_size] => 353 [request_size] => 681 [filetime] => -1 [ssl_verify_result] => 0 [redirect_count] => 1 [total_time] => 302.010762 [namelookup_time] => 0.082477 [connect_time] => 0.160853 [pretransfer_time] => 0.160875 [size_upload] => 0 [size_download] => 0 [speed_download] => 0 [speed_upload] => 0 [download_content_length] => 0 [upload_content_length] => 0 [starttransfer_time] => 301.49231 [redirect_time] => 0.518436 )
Symptoms
When you attempt to create the connection after entering your user id and password, the utterli system appears to hang and crash generating the error code above. This seems to happen repeatedly.
For the record, the user id and password are correct and in wordpress I do have the following option checked in Settings>Write "Enable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols."
Solution
There is no known solution or fix for this problem at this time. I’ll be publishing a feedback note to Utterli shortly and will update this post with any follow up information I receive.
