Before I answer this question let me give you a background on my experience with Garageband. I was a rookie Mac user when I got my Macbook Pro in June of 06. I had used Acid Pro and programs like that on a Windows based PC so I wasn’t sure if Garageband would really come close to being as productive of a program as Acid Pro was.
I came to realize that though Garageband can’t really touch Pro Tools(hence the reason every recording studio uses it) it can still be used as a very good recording program. It doesn’t matter if it’s for you band, like I use it, or creating a podcast or soundtrack for a film you made, all of these things can be done fairly easy in Garageband.
Garageband allows you to pretty easily record using a pre-amp with quite a few built in loops of different instruments. The best thing about these loops is that they’re completely copy written free. This means anything you create you can post and share with people without the scare of the RIAA. I have already made probably about 7 or 8 songs on my own just using loops and the built in instruments. I even noticed that Mike Shinoda of the rock band Linkin Park used a violin loop in one of his songs for his side band Fort Minor. I thought it was pretty interesting and cool
What Garageband does lack is all of the plugins you can get to help improve the quality of sound as well as effects on various tracks. Things like this are offered with Pro Tools.
Garageband is very good for recording music of all types. If you work hard enough you could probably make a song and have people thinking you recorded it in a pro studio with Pro Tools. If you’re a Mac user and haven’t experimented with this program give it a shot. It’s pretty fun and easy to get the hang of. You will probably eventually want to upgrade to Pro Tools if you are serious about making music but until you have the $300 or more to drop on the software Garageband will work just fine.
